CHAPTER TWELVE

Krista

That bitch with the gun was fast.

It was hard to admit that she and her witchy little friend almost had me. I was free, and those three had made the top of my shit list. I already had Trisha leading three full teams working on it. In a week, I’d know everything about them. At that point, I would start to systematically destroy them.

Who would have thought the little sandwich boy would become such a nuisance? The fact he was strong enough to tangle with Ivan surprised me. An older vampire should have been able to rip him apart. There was a mystery there. It would nag at me if I didn’t solve it before I killed him, but I’d learned to live with disappointment.

It was three hours until dawn, and I had to call the king and let him know the mystery vamp was a dead end. Not only that, but Ivan was dead. The head of my security team for the last fifty years. The king wouldn’t care, but for me, Ivan wouldn’t be easy to replace. Not many vampires had the balls to handle the work we did.

It would take me years to find a suitable replacement.

I was a fixer for King Venkoff. When shit went sideways, I got it back on track. If the issue couldn’t be resolved, I made the problem disappear. It was a working life that left me with more enemies than friends. The king’s name could only protect me from so much. For the rest, I needed an Ivan.

Not that it was all the king’s fault. Some of my recent personal ventures had been less than stellar. When the witches forgot to secure their hideout and kidnapped a local werewolf was at the top of the list. Now the werewolves were all riled up, and my place in the kingdom was being called into question.

Right when I needed my security the most, it had been eliminated.

My team recovered some of the spells the witches had been working on, but fragments of a spell were like pieces of a puzzle. If you were missing some, it might never be complete. If I was lucky, it would only take a few centuries to recreate their work. What a shame that would be. I could have changed the world with a spell to enslave werewolves.

I craved power. I was tired of people controlling my life.

When did I get to be in charge?

The king would likely say when everything I touched stopped turning to shit. That was when I’d deserve a promotion. He didn’t understand what I was dealing with on the front lines. Total incompetence. Middle management was a nightmare. Not enough power to change anything, but enough that everyone below you hated your guts.

One day they’d grovel to me.

My phone rang, and a shiver ran down my spine as I answered. “Krista.”

“Have you made any progress on your inquiries?” The king's voice dripped with violence.

Shit.

“I’ve just returned from the meeting Lord Rekenhof set up for us.
